This recap activity will provide an opportunity to review and demonstrate your knowledge and skills in using SPSS syntax commands (FREQUENCIES, DESCRIPTIVES, CORRELATIONS, REGRESSION) to obtain descriptive statistics, conduct correlational analyses, interpret SPSS output, and writing in the APA style.
Use data file w3 recap activity.sav for this activity. Download the data file and open it in SPSS. Explore the data file so you are familiar with the variables. Specifically for this activity, you will use the following variables: grades in statistics course, GPA, four beliefs about statistics, and statistics-related anxiety. For this activity, you may consider grades in statistics courses as the criterion variable, GPA, beliefs about statistics, and statistics-related anxiety as the predictor variables.
This recap activity has four parts: descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, and writing practice:
Descriptive statistics
Obtain appropriate descriptive statistics for statistics performance (sGrade), GPA (gpa), the four statistics beliefs (inadequate, useless, enjoy, technical), and statistics anxiety (sAnxiety).
Correlation
Calculate Pearson correlation coefficients between the seven variables, and interpret the results. Which variables could potentially be used to predict grades in statistics courses? Which variable would be the best predictor?
Regression
Conduct a simple linear regression analysis predicting grades in statistics courses, using the best predictor identified in Step 2. Interpret the results.
Conduct a multiple linear regression analysis predicting grades in statistics courses, using GPA, the four beliefs about statistics, and statistics-related anxiety as the predictors (use SPSS default /METHODS = ENTER). Interpret the results.
Writing practice (APA-style 7th edition, use appropriate levels of headings)
Report the descriptive statistics obtained in Step 1 in a Preliminary Analysis subsection, under Methods(include Table 1)
Report the correlations between grades in statistics courses (the criterion variable) and the predictors (GPA, the four beliefs about statistics, and statistics-related anxiety) in a Predicting Statistics Performancesubsection, under Methods. Describe in the text the predictor variables significantly correlated with statistics performance. Present all the correlations in a table (Table 2).
Report the results of the regression analyses predicting grades in statistics courses from Step 3. Include a table for the multiple regression analysis (Table 3).
Paste the syntax commands into a syntax file, add appropriate comments. Save the syntax file.
Submit
The SPSS syntax file (name the file as Syntax_w3 recap_LastName)
The results write-up in MS WORD (name the file as w3 recap_LastName)
