Summarize two different post seperately.
For each discussion activity, you are responsible for posting a reply to at least two other postings made by your classmates.
Your initial substantive posting should be a thoughtful reflection on at least one aspect of the discussion theme or question posed and can either initiate a line of discussion or be in response to someone else’s posting (i.e., adding your own perspective or additional research to it). Keep in mind that quality is better than quantity and “me too” and “I agree” type postings add little to the conversation. Your postings should demonstrate that you have read and thought about the course material. You are encouraged to reference your course textbook in your postings as well as other relevant outside literature.
Some points to keep in mind:
Be clear and to the point in your postings.
Edit your work. Your posts should be coherent and use proper grammar and spelling.
Keep postings to 300-350 words. Quality is better than quantity.
Contribute your own thoughts about the material you have read.
Support your thoughts by referencing the textbook or other outside literature.
Raise additional questions or points of discussion to stimulate further discussion.
If you have questions, show that you have already tried to find a solution.
Respect the viewpoints of your peers. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand a point. Assume good intentions.
Use the proper terminology introduced in the course readings.
When using literature in your postings, make sure to provide references in proper APA Style.
Show respect and sensitivity to peers’ gender, cultural and linguistic background, political, and religious beliefs.
You are strongly encouraged to take the time to review the following documents on writing quality discussion posting and on taking roles in discussions.
Taking a role in online discussion.
Taking a Role in Online Discussions Below are some roles that anyone in an online discussion can fulfill in order to help move an online discussion forward in productive ways. See if you can determine what role is required in your online discussion and then write a message that takes on that role. Devil’s Advocate • Takes opposing points of view to those currently under discussion Pollinator • Travels to other groups, reads their postings and summarizes points made in other groups not made in home group. Facilitator • Comments on the groups process (e.g. “Perhaps we should all remember to put a subject line in our messages.”) • Encourages others to participate, • Starts a thread or an idea on the topic, if the discussion lags. Summarizer / Discussion Weaver • Summarizes the discussion for the group at specific intervals in 1 or 2 short paragraphs. Usually summarizes twice per week or if the discussion lags • Reminds others about what has already been discussed. • Asks the group what issues have been concluded and what ones are still to be discussed. • Relates ideas in posted messages to one another. Researcher • Assumes responsibility for looking at what is available on the net, journals etc. and brings ideas back to the group. Responder • Replies to others and builds on the ideas of others. This is a role that everyone in the group must perform for every discussion.

This weeks reading on stereotype brings to mind an interaction a friend had during their first week as a director in a company.
A janitor cleaning the space caught his eye as he stepped out of the elevator onto the floor where the directors’ offices were located. They exchanged pleasantries but then came the startling remark: The janitor assumed my friend was on the wrong floor, as the janitor’s floor was on the ground floor. My friend, a new director, was taken aback. He tried to clarify his position, but the janitor’s disbelief was obvious on his face as he shrugged and continued his work.
The janitor, although white, works on a team of janitors who are predominantly people of colour. Seeing my friend, he immediately associated his colour with working low-tier jobs.
Unpacking the incident with my friend when he told me about it, two things came to mind: the assumption that the only reason a black man was on the executive floor was to work as a janitor highlights the stereotype and self-fulfilling prophecy concept where people’s expectations not only lead them to see things in line with their beliefs (i.e., perceptual confirmation) but also to interact with a person in ways that elicit expected behaviours. The janitor could easily have asked if my friend needed help finding his way if he felt there was a need. Seeking to understand and being intentional about one’s own learning are great ways to prevent these kinds of situations.
More importantly, this incident underscores the urgent need for change within the organization. The rarity of seeing a black person in an executive or managerial role indicates the lack of inclusivity. The organization needs to take proactive steps to increase the representation of minority groups in leadership positions through targeted recruitment, retention efforts, and mentorship programs.

I used to work at a factory in my hometown, a small farming community. The racism, as well as other prejudices some of my coworkers held, became obvious quite quickly. It was really shocking to me how casual some of them were with the racist jokes they made. There was one person in particular who had very strong opinions about the temporary workers, who were mostly Black or South Asian, management brought in during the busy part of the season. She would constantly make comments about them being lazy or how unintelligent they were, overall just belittling these individuals based on their ethnicity.
After reading about intergroup relations, this could have a lot to do with the lack of interaction the in-group had with the out-group in this situation (Safdar & Sanderson, 2021, p. 264). Being surrounded by very little diversity, the only close-contact a lot of my coworkers got with individuals belonging to other races would be the temp workers brought on at work. The issue is that the training at this facility was near-nonexistent, even for the permanent employees. This paired with the fact English was a second language to a lot of these workers, things often did not run smoothly. Instead of attributing this to poor management and a lack of training, their race was blamed instead. Since many of my coworkers, living in a small, white-dominant town all their life, have very few interactions with people of colour and being surrounded by the enforcement of negative stereotypes of people belonging to other races, it has become clear why they thought this way. However, this does not make it right.
One way to combat this would be if my coworkers made an effort to get to know some of the temp workers personally, it would increase intergroup contact, reducing prejudice (Safdar & Sanderson, 2021, p. 279). I would also propose rethinking why they hold these prejudices and perhaps using the dissociation model to work toward a non-prejudiced self-identity (Safdar, 2024). This may be a more difficult course of action as individuals who have thought a certain way for so long will likely be stubborn to attempt to achieve change.
