While maps are certainly used in combination with other information visualization forms, they have their own set of design challenges to navigate for successful communication of information. I’m looking for you to apply some of the ideas about map design from the Meirelles reading. Please be sure to read the Meirelles reading before proceeding with the assignment.
Choose a map published during the last six months connected with a current event. Please do not choose an interactive map as a future assignment will ask you to discuss the design strategies for information graphics where interaction with the users is intentionally designed. ETA – Please do not choose a graph or chart designed to be part of a marketing or advertising campaign.
In an essay of 500-750 words discuss the aspects of the map with respect to at least three visual elements discussed in the Meirelles reading. These elements may include:
the nature of thematic maps (p. 116)
map projections (p. 118)
use of scale (pp. 122-3)
use of symbols (p. 124)
Bertin’s system of visual variables (p. 127)
your map’s corresponding method from the list of graphical methods on p. 128 and the case studies that form the rest of the chapter
As with the last graphic critique assignment part of what I’m looking for is that you’re choosing the appropriate issues that relate to the chart/graph you’re working with.
Also, please note that this assignment is more of a graphic identification assignment than a critique, although if you find something problematic about the visual choices your map’s designer made you can certainly discuss it in the essay. As with data displays, maps are a mixed bag.
