I expect students to hand in a draft that shows they have found an article,  summarized the article and are aware of all the instructions. Students will summarize and analyze a historical New York Times newspaper article. Students will follow the required prompts and specific format described below. How to find the historical New York Times article:
Log in to Lehman portal.
Go to Lehman College Library Databases, and search “New York Times Historical Newspapers”.

Search different terms and dates in the search engine in the NY Times Historical Newspaper database, and look for articles to find one to write about.   Article should be from before 1980, and should not be a book review.
Students will research and find a historical newspaper article using New York Times Historical Newspapers databased (see next page). The article must be historical and clearly relevant to any topic in the class.  It should focus on a topic of sex or gender history, as seen in this course, not general US history. The article must be from the period 1817-1980, and should not be a book review or advertisement. Finding an article might not happen quickly, and students must put time into finding an appropriate article with enough content to write about. The student will address the prompts below. The paper is 4 -5 page double-spaced. (at least 900 words)
Paper must follow the prompts below and include required Subheadings within the paper.
Paper must be in the students’ own words to the greatest extent, aside from required quotations.  Paper should not have any sources that are not in the requirements. Paper should not use any sources that are not from this course. Papers that do not follow the criterion will be returned ungraded and must be redone for a grade.  Papers that do not have a New York Timeshistorical newspaper article from 1817-1980 will not be graded.  See Rubric.  
Students must complete the following prompts/directions in their paper:
1. A brief description of the article, date, author if applicable type of article (news, opinion/editorial, letter to the editor.) Do not use a book review or advertisement. (1 or 2 sentences)
2. Under the subheading “Summary” provide a detailed summary of the article. Include relevant information to summarize thoroughly. What is happening in the article? Who are the people involved, etc. What are the main ideas described? Student must include at least two quotes, citing the page number. Student must explain the quotes they use. Students must cover all of the article, not only one part. (This should be at least 250 words)
3. Under the subheading “Analysis” include how this newspaper article relates to one reading from this course.  Clearly state the reading you are using, referring to the title, and author if available, and date. PowerPoints do not count as this reading.  In what way does it relate to the class reading? Provide at least two quotes from the class reading, and explain how they relate. Does the newspaper article confirm the information in this particular class reading? Does it add complexity to the class reading? Does it question the information from the class reading? Include any further information needed to analyze the newspaper article. Page number citations must be used. (students may use a second class reading). (This should be at least 250 words)
4. Under the subheading “Analysis II” continue to illustrate how the newspaper article relates to the material in this course as a whole. What is the main topic of the newspaper article, in relation to the course? Does the topic seem more complicated?  Does it add or confirm what you know about the general topic? Is this newspaper article important to our understanding of this historical topic? How does it relate to the specific time period? Students may use PowerPoints for information. (This should be at least 200 words)
5. Under the subheading “Reaction” include your general reaction to the newspaper article. Since this is a historical article, some things might be unclear or not make sense.  Does anything in this article not make sense? Is anything unclear to you? This can be a particular word, phrase, or section. Was this article surprising in any way? What is your general reaction to this assignment? Include a quote.Student should use first person, “I” statements. (at least 100 words)
6. Under the subheading “Process,” include a paragraph about how you found this article in the database, the steps you took, why you chose this article, and why you chose the class reading. Do you think the newspaper article worked well in this assignment? Why or why not? Include any challenges you had completing this essay. (at least 100 words) Students should use first person “I” statements.
7. A pdf copy of the New York Times article attached.
8. Summary and Analysis must be the longest sections of your essay.
