What life experiences have led you towards the nursing field?
Use this about me – Growing up in a family full of nurses, with my grandmother as a retired L&D nurse and a cousin currently working as a NICU RN, I’ve always been surrounded by the healthcare profession. Despite my deep desire to become a nurse, my father’s belief that nursing was solely a woman’s job held me back. I wanted to make him proud, so I suppressed my dreams and went into the finance/real estate indursty. Ironically, my own experiences as a NICU baby, spending significant time in hospitals as a child, fueled my passion for nursing, especially working with children. However, my decade-long residency in Oregon revealed another calling: giving back to my community. As a member of the Latino community, I’ve witnessed the disparities and underserved needs firsthand, igniting my desire to effect change. Additionally, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve felt the absence of representation in the medical field and aspire to make strides towards greater inclusivity and understanding. Before my grandfather passed away last year, one of the last things he said to me was to pursue what makes me happy in life and to follow my dreams, emphasizing that it’s never too late. Taking care of my grandmother in the months following his passing has reinforced the importance of his words. I’ve come to accept that now is my time to pursue my dreams wholeheartedly.
