Our food choices are admittedly more often shaped by personal habits, budget, tradition, and culture than by ecological principles. 
Consider the traditional American Thanksgiving feast, Christmas dinner, or just a family meal, whose centerpiece is likely to be a large serving of meat.  Compare that to the menus and recipes more typical of Italy, Japan, China, India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Thinking more of ecology than of tradition, why do the food choices from many other parts of the world emphasize pasta and vegetables?
In some regions, particular plant foods are emphasized.  As a specific example, potatoes are traditionally a major part of the diet in Ireland, Norway, and Lithuania.  What does the ecological setting have to do with this food-eating custom?
On the other hand, the diets common to some cultures emphasize meat. Meat, milk, and bread, but few fruits and vegetables, might be a typical meal for populations in northern latitudes and in desert areas, for example.  Again, what ecological factors seem relevant in explaining this human habit?
Does it make any difference whether we eat plants or animals?  Think about ecological advantages and disadvantages as you compare these food sources. Although animal rights concerns and the practice of vegetarianism are relevant in this comparison, they are not in question.  Concentrate on ecological principles as a basis for your thinking.
