Richard Wagner is a classic example of a horrible person who created incredible art. As you know from the readings, the combination of his music’s dramatic power and his own deeply prejudiced world-view caused his music to be adopted by the Nazis as a sort of “soundtrack” to their movement. To this day, his music remains illegal to perform publicly in Israel, because of its painful association with the Holocaust.

Discuss what you think of the Israeli law. Does it go too far? Or is it perfectly reasonable to outlaw music so closely associated with such unimaginable horror? Or somewhere in between? Explain your response.
Name a couple of TODAY’S well-known artists (they could be musicians, actors, comedians, etc.) who fall into the category of “horrible people who create great art.” Discuss what makes them controversial; you can use the internet to research this, but your answer MUST be in your own words, and you should use an artist you’re familiar with, not one you learned about by googling “horrible people who create great art.”
Discuss how you, personally, approach this topic in your own life. What’s your personal “policy” when faced with an artist/performer whose work you love but whom you otherwise find abhorrent?
