Instructions: Use the research the class has collected (i.e., class database) to answer our question: Do higher perceptions of susceptibility to negative health outcomes predict physical activity behavior?
Your answer should synthesize all of the research from the class database, pointing out trends and controversies in the literature.
Ensure your answer accurately represents every article in our class database.
The text of this synthesis should be no more than 1 full page, double-spaced with standard 1″ margins and 12-point black type.
Assignment Components:
Follow general APA format for your document and references page. Do not include a title page.
Provide an evidence-based answer to the question. You need to use the evidence from the class database to determine the answer and support your synthesis.
Be sure your answer incorporates ALL evidence gathered by the class. For example, if the database has 10 articles you must use all 10 articles in your synthesis.
Comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the studies as justification for your answer to the RQ.
Provide a brief recommendation based on your answer to the RQ
Utilize in-text citations, and a reference list at the end, both in APA format.
Provide feedback to teammates by August 15th (see note below)
Keep in mind:
Write in full sentences with appropriate paragraph breaks.
Make sure to provide support for your answer.
Use language that you understand and that your classmates will easily understand.  General rules of thumb:
No direct quotes. Scientific writing prefers paraphrasing to direct quotes.
In general, scientific writing focuses on other people’s evidence, so expect nearly all of your sentences to contain a citation or many citations. ( in-text citations are good)
Trends: (Talk about at least 2 trends) in last paragraph – last statement being the recommendation *
Assessment of DV: Weak vs. Moderate vs. Strong questionnaire strength:
-No trend
Age of population: Three categories of age:
-No trend
Measure of IV: HBM vs. non-HBM 5-15 questionnaire vs. non-HBM 1-4 questionnaire
-No trend
Control of extraneous variables/disease state of population: Specific Illness vs. General Population
-Diabetes populations had a positive correlation (two studies in Type 2)
-General population had no significant correlation
Control of extraneous variables: country of implementation: North America vs. Asia vs. MIddle East:
-Middle East no significant correlation (2 papers)
-North American no clear trend
-Asian populations had a positive correlation (2 papers)
Number of participants: 300 and more, less than 300
No significant correlation for all studies with less than 300 participants
Suggests that the correlation is small, so a large sample size is needed to estimate a significant correlation
Grading on:
* Answer to the RQ
▪ Strengths/weaknesses of the research/trends
▪ Clinical application/recommend —- application/recommendation
Research Considered
Did the synthesis reflect a consideration of ALL the collected research–including research that may be conflicting, findings that were limited to specific circumstances or populations, etc.?
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeEvaluation of Studies
Did the synthesis reflect the ability to discern the relative value of studies (strengths/weaknesses) based on their methodology?
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeAnswer
Did the synthesis provide an evidence-based, clear and understandable answer to the question? Did the synthesis provide justification/support for the answer to the research question?
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeSynthesis
Did the synthesis consist of a succinct characterization of the research as a whole, avoiding summaries of individual studies except when necessary to draw contrast?
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeCitations, Grammar and Style
Did the synthesis consist of appropriate and effective grammar, accurate citations, and a writing style appropriate for scientific writing (one or two small errors are acceptable)?
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeRecommendation/Application
Synthesis concludes with a single sentence stating what practitioners should take away from the research and answer to the RQ. “Based on the research, practitioners should…”
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeFeedback to Peers
-5 for not providing thoughtful and critical feedback to your teammates on their syntheses
