Hodgdon, Barbara. “‘The Coming on of Time’: Richard III.” In The End Crowns All: Closure and Contradiction in Shakespeare’s History. Princeton University Press, 2014. 100-126.
Use the above article and write a 500-word response. Your goal is to triangulate Shakespeare’s voice, the secondary source, and your own.
1) The first paragraph should be a summary of the thesis or a key point raised in the secondary sources, focusing on the author’s insights into Richard III (at least 250 words). You must quote and analyze language from the secondary source.
2) In the second paragraph, respond in your own voice to the secondary source by adding to or challenging the argument. Support your argument by quoting, citing, and analyzing Shakespeare’s language. You should pick evidence — quotes and scenes — from the play that we have not already discussed as a class. I want you to build on what we have talked about in class, so don’t repeat what we’ve already talked about. Give new, original insights. What does this source teach us about how to read Shakespeare, what Shakespeare means to our culture, and/or what Shakespeare teaches us about ecological thinking?
3) To support your argument, you must quote, cite, and analyze the words of both the secondary source and Shakespeare in great detail. You are being graded on your ability to support your argument with evidence from the text.
