Assignment 1: Annotated Bibliography
Review the syllabus and write in or type the following due dates and keep for your records:

Due Date: ____________________

The annotated bibliography is a resourceful way to start a research paper or project because it aids you in planning and collecting sources you may use in your paper. Annotated bibliographies ensure that you provide enough substance as you research your topic. You must locate at least 5 credible sources (books, academic articles, periodicals-newspapers/magazines) and write annotations of those sources on the topic you have chosen. Do not include internet sources, unless they are electronic books or academic journals provided online. You can choose your own topic, but it must relate to  identity (our course’s theme) in some way.

Introduction

The annotated bibliography must include an introduction that contains background information on the topic from current, credible sources. It must also contain your thesis statement.

Annotations must be 200-300 words each and include a detailed summary of the source, such that a person who hadn’t read the source will know exactly what it contains-what its main ideas and points are. In addition, I will require a brief evaluation of each source’s strengths, weaknesses, and overall credibility (credibility of author and/or the publication). You must also provide a plan in each annotation (only 1-2 sentences) for how you intend to use the source in your paper. Is it a source that will help you write your section of background information? Is it a source that supports your argument? Is it a source that expresses an opposing or divergent viewpoint that you are including in order to refute, etc.?

See Annotated Bibliography Peer Review Template as a guide (available on Moodle)

In your annotations, you should paraphrase the source rather than relying heavily on quotations. Copying material directly from a source without proper citation is plagiarism and will result in a zero on the assignment.

At the top of each annotation, you must provide a bibliographical citation in MLA format. Arrange the annotations in alphabetical order by author’s last name (or first word of title if not author listed).

Examples of sources that are unacceptable: Encyclopedia articles (World Book, Britannica, Wikipedia, etc); Dictionary definitions; other websites such as: epinions.com or wikihow, or sites of tips and quotes like about.com, yahoo, askjeeves, etc.
