The Scientific Paper Write-Up for the course is now assigned. You are to read Scientific Paper 3 (Disturbance by Fire Frequency and Bison Grazing Modulate Grasshopper Assemblages in Tallgrass Prairie) and summarize the paper in an approximately two-page write-up.
A five-paragraph write-up (one paragraph summarizing each of the paper’s four major sections — introduction, methods, results, and discussion — plus a fifth paragraph critiquing the paper as a whole) would work well, but you can decide exactly how you’d like to structure your own write-up (being sure to include all of the components just mentioned).
I won’t put any restrictions on margins or spacing or font size or any of that, so everyone’s write-up will vary somewhat in length. As long as you can demonstrate that you’ve read the entire paper and can interpret and analyze the objectives, procedures, and conclusions, the exact write-up length is flexible.
I do need to emphasize that write-ups MUST BE WRITTEN ENTIRELY IN YOUR OWN WORDS. That means 1) this is an individual assignment independent of your classmates, and 2) you may not copy directly from the paper itself (even though you are summarizing the content of a specific scientific paper, you must put that summary IN YOUR OWN WORDS).
