What is American Literature? From American Romanticism to Modern Comedy, you have studied a wide breadth of American Literature this semester. You have read novels, short stories, and poems. Now, you have to answer this question based on all of your acquired knowledge. What is American Literature? What features must a work have to be considered a part of the canon? What makes something quintessentially that enigmatic thing called “American Literature”? Over the past months, you have written weekly journal posts to attempt to formulate a definition of what American Literature is. Now, I want you to bring together all your work and write an essay that defines what you think makes a work a piece of American Literature. To do this, you will look back on the posts you have written. Take from those posts what you think are a definitive list of characteristics of American Lit. Then, provide evidence from the works you have read to support your argument(s). Close read the primary texts that you choose. I want you to quote from the texts and explain how those quotes prove your arguments. 1500-2000 words MLA format (Make sure you cite your sources to the best of your ability.) Formal writing (no contractions, no slang, etc.) You MUST use at least 5 works we have encountered this semester as evidence. These works must be from 5 different movements or units. I want to see that you have read and understand a full breadth of our materials this semester. I do NOT want you to use any sources other than the primary texts that we have read this semester.
