Based on the Work Environment Assessment results, our workplace appears to be significantly lacking in civility, with a score falling under 50, indicating a very unhealthy environment. Incivility in the workplace can manifest in various ways, such as disrespectful communication, hostile interactions, or exclusionary behavior. In our case, these behaviors may be prevalent, leading to a toxic atmosphere that hinders productivity, collaboration, and overall well-being (Atashzadeh et al., 2021). The need for a comprehensive and systematic approach to prevent incivility is evident. This involves the active involvement of various stakeholders, including nurses, officials, patients, and visitors. Strategies such as improving nursing and communication skills, implementing de-escalation techniques, and enhancing public awareness about healthcare processes are essential in fostering a civil workplace (Sánchez Wohlever, 2019). In my own experience, I have encountered incivility in the workplace from a charge nurse who consistently responded disrespectfully. This behavior disrupted discussions and made me feel marginalized and disrespected. To address this, I made note of specific instances of the charge nurse’s behavior and approached my supervisor privately to express my concerns. I was so uncomfortable with the behavior that I could not address it to the charge nurse herself and having seen her behavior she would not have taken it constructively. Over time, the situation improved, and the workplace atmosphere became more respectful and inclusive. Similarly, a study by Abdollahzadeh et al, 2017 shows a comprehensive and systematic approach to mitigate workplace incivility in healthcare settings, necessitating active engagement from nurses, officials, patients, and their visitors. Nurses can contribute by refining their nursing and communication skills through training initiatives and adopting innovative care methods. Moreover, enhancing the quality of nursing education plays a pivotal role in tackling this pervasive issue. Efforts to prevent workplace incivility must extend to public education, aiming to portray an accurate image of nurses and hospitals while bolstering awareness of hospitalization processes at both local and national levels. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of incivility, the study advocates for assessing the perspectives of patients, visitors, and residents, who often serve as sources of such behavior. By incorporating the viewpoints of all stakeholders, healthcare institutions can devise more robust strategies to prevent and address workplace incivility effectively (Abdollahzadeh et al, 2017).
