Explain the difference between perceived risk and actual risk. From the literature, what are some attitudes, perceptions and feelings that girls experience when participating in adventure therapy and why is it important to have knowledge of these? Also, in the article: “Adventure Therapy with Girls At-Risk: Responses to Outdoor Experiential Activities” there is a section titled “An Awareness of the Inability to Transfer the Values”. Similarly, pgs. 92-93 “Climbing for change” of the Adventure Therapy text also speak of other challenges of integrating values upon returning to their communities. Do you think this is a situation of actual or perceived risk? Do you think there might be contraindications for AT in certain situations related to “Climbing for Change” or other populations that have to return to inhospitable environments? If so, how might you change your approach to meet these clients where they are at? Do you have any ideas on how to assist in creating more long term change in the populations discussed?
