Being an Armenian raised in America since age seven but born in Zeytun, Armenia, I have concentrated on inherited and familial predispositions and how they may affect my health. My Armenian background protects me against cystic fibrosis and Tay-Sachs disease, which are more common elsewhere. Since heart disease and diabetes are more widespread among Armenians, there may be a higher risk.

They provide immunizations for children in poverty-stricken countries, addressing malnutrition and food insecurity issues globally and they believe and are attempting to bring the ability to receive a quality education to every corner of the world. They kicked it off by organizing a Field Emergency Operation Center (EOC). By doing this, professionals were able to keep an eye on events and react when necessary, using data being collected at the main site. (CDC)
They worked closely with the NCDC (National Climate Data Center) and WHO (World Health Organization) monitoring infectious diseases like Chicken Pox, Malaria, and Diarrheal Diseases establishing 69 reporting sites to test and watch for 22 different diseases. (CDC)

People need hope. They need to know they can achieve goals before they can even set them. Both the WHO and UNICEF can offer educational opportunities that might not otherwise be found; WHO focuses primarily on health and UNICEF makes quality education not just available but easily accessible. There is an old saying with unknown specific origin about giving a man a fish versus teaching him to fish. One will feed him for a day, the other will feed him for a lifetime. The previously mentioned organizations can put education in the hands of people that really need it so that they can find a way out of the darkness.
In Week 1, you reviewed a portion of the video, How Your Biology Affects Your Health, which discussed biological determinants of health. Focusing on familial and genetic predispositions, research your own ethnicity or ancestry. Are there any diseases you are less likely to acquire due to your ancestry? What are they? Are there any diseases you are more likely to acquire due to your ancestry? What are they?
This was a loaded question, my parents did DNA testing to see what our origins are, and I am a mutt, to say the least. Everything from European (vague) to Neanderthal (I do act like a cave person from time to time.) I had to put out a call to my father to let me know what percentage is the most and I decided to lead with that. I am European is all he said.
HELIUS (Healthy Life in an Urban Setting) is a study that aims to narrow the racial and ethnic gap when researching one’s predisposition to specific illnesses. Race and ethnicity are so much more than the color of your skin. Demographic factors must come into play to understand who is at risk for what. All people from Asia and all people from Africa do not fit into the same box.
That said, even with the HELIUS study, I found it difficult to find predispositions of Europeans not living in Europe.
I did, however, come across an article by Oxford University that shook me, to say the least. One study, from ancient DNA says that Europeans have a higher predisposition to a diagnosis of MS (Multiple Sclerosis) These studies follow ancient genome data that goes as far back as the Bronze Age. The reason this article really got my attention is that my mother (with a remarkably similar DNA history to my father’s) has MS. Two of my sisters have spots on their brains. We all have neurologists that we seek to keep an eye out for the fretful day that we potentially will be diagnosed with the odd illness. I immediately forwarded the study to my parents.
