PLEASE RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING POST OF ANOTHER CLASSMATE IN 50 WORDS OR MORE:
1. The significances of the description of the black box from the short story “The Lottery,” is to provide a history of the ritual. In the story it states, “The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago… before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born.” This provides a background for the readers to understanding the lottery had been a tradition that took place for many years.
2. In the story Tessie is the town member that is selected for the ritual of stoning. When her family is selected by the lottery she expresses her displeasure by stating the lottery is unfair. She felt her husband was not given the proper amount of time to select his assignment. This is her way of rationalizing and blaming others for the tragedy her family will now need to endure.
3. I believe the author Shirley Jackson composed this story to give people perspective. Her view of American culture is that we cling to tradition and go along with social norms. In this story some of the towns people discuss that other towns have stopped using the lottery. This leaves some members of the community in disbelief and others questions. As a society we have the ability to grow, change, and adapt as we gain more knowledge. Even in American society today, people would rather follow social norms, then feel left out by questioning things going on or going against them.
4. In the story “Rocket Night” the child chooses to be sent to space is normally the school/class outcast. In the fourth paragraph, the author describes the child who has been selected this year as poor, social isolated, and with poor manners. I believe the author is trying to convey how our society views children and families of lower income.
5. The victims in both stories are chosen in uniques ways. In “The Lottery” the victim is chosen by random and in “Rocket Night” the victim is chosen by its peers. While I find both ways horrific, the way in which they choose the victim in “Rocket Night” was worse than “The Lottery.”  A child can not control its families social status or income.
6. We absolutely carry out modern day “Rocket Nights” and lotteries.  Many people want to be socially accepted and willing to follow along with things or idea they may also question. Like the old saying, “if your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?” The answer for many people is no, but in reality they would. This can be seen in a simple form as the Stanley Cup phenomenon. People may own other similar cups but felt the need to have this particular kind due to social pressure. This also ties in concept of “Rocket Nights,” as people did not want to be the odd person out by not owning the popular cup. Now this phenomenon does not hurt anyone but it bring light to the bigger subject. If you can get millions of people to purchase a cup out of fear of not being social accepted or to fit in with social norms, what else can you get a population to do?
7. What inspired these authors to write these short stories?
