Argumentative Paper Assignment Sheet
Length: 5-6 pages long (approximately 1300-1800 words)
Mode: The essay is to be argumentative. It should advance a single, coherent argument that presents a reasonably disputable interpretation of a text or texts on the course reading list. The essay should propose an original thesis and reading of the text. It should not restate either generally accepted commonplaces or recapitulate class discussion. You should not consult secondary sources, including internet study guides. Be sure to support your claims with evidence from the text and be sure to analyze any extended quotations. Although this is not a close reading assignment, close reading is an important part of developing and advancing subtle, sophisticated, and convincing arguments.
The topic of the paper is to be your choice.
Your introduction should lead your reader to a clear statement of your thesis. You should also write with an awareness of the significance of your argument: in casual academic jargon, your argument should include an implicit answer to the question “so what?” I have listed a few possible topics below: use them if you find yourself unable to find a topic or if you want a preliminary precedent against which to compare your own topic.
