Review research regarding appropriate toys for young children.  Then, study two different toys for a child age 19-36 months.  Write a 1-2 page paper supporting the toy selection. (NAEYC 1.c)
For this assignment, the task is to study two (2) different toys for children within 19-36 months.  Students will begin this assignment by viewing the 2019 TIMPANI Toy Study video on YouTube.
Then, students will read the following article:
Trawick-Smith, J. et al. (2014). Which toys promote high-quality play? Reflections on the five-year anniversary of the TIMPANI study. Young Children, 69, 40-47.
https://www.jstor.org/stable/ycyoungchildren.69.2.40?seq=8
After viewing the video and reading the article, students will select a total of 2 toys which they think will meet the developmental needs of a child within the specified age range. Toys can be located at a toy store or any major toy distributing establishment or students can also access toys by borrowing them from a relative, friend etc. Students will examine each toy and take notes (the toy does not need to be purchased).
Finally, type and answer the following questions for the 2 toys which you have selected.
What is the name of your toy? Give a general description of the toy. How does the child play with it or use it?
Cut and paste a picture of your toy.
How old is the child for whom the toy is intended? What features of the toy make it developmentally appropriate?
Which domains of development is your toy designed to stimulate? How are they stimulated?
What are some of the specific features of the toy (size, shape, color, etc) that enhances its attractiveness and play value?
Are there any poorly designed aspects of the toy, such as not being appropriate or not being challenging enough, etc.
Is the toy marketed for boys, girls, or children of specific ethnic backgrounds?
How might the toy mediate a child’s behavior?
