The Problem of Personal Identity – its moral and legal implications
Examine the theories of personal identity we studied in this section of the course. Determine whether you believe in soul theory, body theory, brain theory, memory theory, or whether persons are bundles of perception. Also take into account Socrates’ claim that souls are selves and Parfit’s idea that there are no selves. Then consider the following scenario:
You are a member of a five-person parole board. A prisoner is up for parole. Two members say the prisoner’s character has changed and s/he should be released. One member says it is impossible for character to change and refuses to cast a vote to release the prisoner. The fourth member says the prisoner just needs a bit more time to improve and she will likely vote to release the prisoner at the prisoner’s next parole hearing. You cast the deciding vote.
How do you vote? What theory of personal identity informs your decision? (Be sure to define the theory you decide to use).
What are the moral implications of the theory and how do those implications apply to your decision?
Discuss one other theory and why you rejected it.
