Overview
Because you are already practicing as a BSN nurse, you are familiar with assessing persons and families, and advocating to improve their outcomes. As an MSN professional, you will assess trends within a healthcare system and advocate for change to improve outcomes for patient populations, processes, systems, and the profession. Scholarly evidence, nursing frameworks, stakeholder information, and data are used to effectively assess trends, outcomes, and innovative strategies to improve outcomes.
Scenario
Imagine you are working in your future role as an MSN professional nurse (e.g., nurse executive, family nurse practitioner, nurse educator, population health nurse, or a patient safety and quality nurse) and you have identified health inequity as a trend in your setting.
When considering this trend, you realize you need to analyze how it may impact your role as an MSN professional nurse. This then allows you to determine what could be done to affect health equity from your specific role. Because you want to be proactive in addressing this trend, you realize it will be important to communicate your findings so next steps can be taken. In support of that goal, you decide to draft a detailed letter to stakeholders to advocate for change related to the negative trend of health inequity in your setting.
Once your letter is complete and you have received feedback from your instructor, we encourage you to translate your hard work into action by actually sending your letter. You could share the letter with the stakeholder you selected for this project, or you could alternatively choose another professional organization, senator, or the president of your hospital. This would allow you to actively advocate for change that is impactful in your setting. Next week you will be reminded of your options for starting to take your knowledge and skills and translate them into positive actions.
Directions
Your healthcare trend letter should be completed using Microsoft Word. Be sure to include appropriate APA citations for your work.
Address the following criteria as you complete this project.
MSN Role: Explain how health equity is related to your role or specialty and support claims with specific evidence from at least one scholarly source. To do this, you will need to answer the question, why is inequity happening in your specific practice? You will also need to discuss who it impacts along with who the stakeholders are to address the problem. As a hint, you may wish to review the spheres of care and determine which is most relevant for the context of how health equity manifests in your setting.
Information Sources: Assess the information you will need to effectively address the trend and support claims with specific evidence from at least two scholarly or professional sources. Determine what sources of information will provide you with valuable insight into this trend. Identification of this data might include national data sets, accrediting benchmarks, or organizational data, among other options. You will also need to discuss evidence on why change is needed.
System Impacts: Analyze the impact of the trend on a healthcare system and support claims with specific evidence from at least one scholarly source. Consider conducting a force field analysis to support this work. Develop the anticipated counterargument. What objections might stakeholders have to addressing this trend? You may wish to discuss system barriers. Then develop an effective rebuttal that discusses system drivers and potential positive outcomes of addressing the trend.
Information and Communication Technologies: Explain how information and communication technologies can be used in addressing the health equity trend. You may wish to review options in telehealth or another technology in your work.
