The purpose of the final community organization paper is to consider an issue for the macro social environment, engage with a community organization whose mission relates to the issue, learn about the community, understand this organization’s mission, function, impact, and design a hypothetical project in collaboration with the organization that serves a need of community (e.g., a neighborhood clean-up day, a wellness fair, a neighborhood festival, etc.). This is a large project that should be embraced throughout the entire semester because of this, portions of this project will be due at different times, feedback will be provided, and students will build upon the feedback to craft a well-developed and thoroughly considered final paper.
In this draft students will focus specifically on their identified community organization and its internal environment. Students should begin to research the organization’s internal processes and structure more specifically. This can be done through research and real-life involvement with the organization. Typically, students are required to interact with the organization in person by visiting the agency, attending a community meeting, event sponsored by the organization, etc. Students are encouraged to contact an employee at the organization for a phone interview to gain more insight, and if possible participate in any open meetings or events that might be occurring through a face-to-face or virtual platform. For this assignment students will submit a draft that begins to explore and explain the organization’s:
culture
structure
lines of authority
channels of communication
power and authority structures
values and traditions
empowerment efforts
This draft should be at approximately 2 pages in length and include references to the course’s textbook and other resources used to gather knowledge about the agency. A revised version of draft one will be used in section III of the final paper.
After draft two is submitted, the instructor will provide comments and suggestions to students on how to build on this topic and work towards the completion of the final paper. Draft two is designed to be integrated into Section III of the final paper. Students are welcome to copy and paste what they wrote in this draft into their final paper, although it is expected that students will revise and add content accordingly.
