Assignment Directions: We have now read the two plays: Death of a Salesman and Antigone. Both are considered tragedies (one modern, one ancient) and we have discussed many similarities and differences between the two works.
In 800 to 1200 words, compare and contrast Death of a Salesman and Antigone. You may wish to discuss any of the following as your basis of comparison between the two works (or you may suggest your own idea for a comparative analysis paper). If you are choosing one of these bullets, choose only one:
Compare and contrast one or more of Aristotle’s 6 Elements of Drama in the two works (Plot, Character, Theme, Language, Music, Spectacle)
Compare and contrast the adherence (or lack thereof) to the Unities of Time, Place, and Action in the two works.
Compare and contrast the two works as seen through one of our Critical Lenses (Feminism, Multiculturalism, Religion, Economics, etc.)
Compare and contrast the 5 Tragic elements in each work (Tragic Hero, Tragic Flaw, Tragic Realization, Tragic Fall, Catharsis)
Traditional Essay: The paper should have an Introduction paragraph, 2 to 4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
Your assignment must contain at least 4 examples of textual evidence from either of the plays (minimum 2 from each play) in order to support your claims and demonstrate Critical Thinking (regardless of which option you choose). This means quotes of dialogue, stage directions, etc. directly from the scriipt/play with page citations. Since no outside research is necessary, a formal Works Cited page is not required, but parenthetical in-text citations should be used after every piece of textual evidence (as well as for image citations, as noted in Option 2 above). It is important, however, to demonstrate effective integration of your textual evidence into your writing. Please observe all other style, grammar, and punctuation guides for formal, academic writing. Remember, this is an academic paper, not a discussion or blog post, so do your best to avoid 1st person references (“I,” “me,” “my,” etc.), slang or colloquial phrases, and proofread your work for typos, spelling, and accuracy.
As a reminder, Plagiarism, or any kind of Academic Dishonesty, will not be tolerated and will result in an immediate zero, if not failure of the entire course. If in doubt, use quotes and explain where the information you are using is coming from (again, no outside sources are required for this paper, as you should be able to analyze the texts yourself).
