And, these are your notes, not any found online. You should have annotations that identify specific literary elements and devices that can serve as your thesis points to analyze the poem. 1. What is obvious in the poem? Is it repeating words, sounds, patterns (punctuation, word choice, specific kind of image, negativity/positivity, message) etc.?
2. What is the pronounced message/theme of the poem? (There are almost always multiple messages/themes.)
3. Are there symbols in the work?
4. Are there similes in the work?
5. Are there metaphors in the work?
6. Is there evidence of an apostrophe in the poem? Why is it this reference? What does it mean?
7. Is there use of metonymy? What does it mean?
8. Is there use of synecdoche? What does it mean?
9. From what point of view is it expressed? Why is that significant?
10. Are any of the “-als” (This is my reference.) evident? (Spiritual, financial, economical, social, political, relational, marital, internal (struggle/influence), external (struggle/influence), mental, communal, revelational, etc.). What do they mean?
11. Are numbers referenced? What do they mean?
12. How is the device of time utilized/referenced in this poem/work?
