The theme for our class is “The Powerful and the Powerless.”
Use the women in “The Sick Rose” by William Blake and Eveline in “Eveline” by James Joyce. Eveline is depicted as a powerless character due to fear and love. Eveline is burdened by her familial responsibilities, particularly her duty to care for her father and siblings after her mother’s death. Her sense of duty and love towards her family weighs heavily on her, constraining her ability to pursue her own desires and aspirations. She is hesitant to leave behind the familiar and embark on a new life with Frank, the man she loves. Eveline’s powerlessness compares to that of the rose, in the “Sick Rose.” The rose is powerless to worm and his dark secret love. Indeed, the worm destroys the rose’s life.
