ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS WITH DETAILS ARE IN THE SLIDES THAT I GAVE.
In this assignment, you will design an ancient Egyptian tomb, and write an excavation report for it. First you will decide where to place your tomb in time and space (i.e. an Old Kingdom tomb from Gizalooks very different from a Theban tomb from the New Kingdom.)You will then create an identity for your tomb owner (name, family, profession, personality) and construct a tomb for them according to Egyptian conventions. Finally, you will act as excavator of the tomb “publishing” the tomb plans and elevations, texts, images, and any finds the tomb might hold. In your interpretation of the tomb, please reference ancient tombs and cite sources. You are free to be as creative as you wish(i.e. the tomb owner can be Jeff Bezos and you can integrate images computers, etc.) as long as you can rationally connect your choices to ancient precedents. Be sure to cite carefully and include a bibliography.
Your project should include the following:
1) Tomb Plan and Elevation (Digitally rendered or by hand using graph paper)
2) Texts-what texts are in the tomb, where are they placed?
3) Images- what images are in the tomb, where are they placed? Are they painted, relief ?
4) Were there any finds in the tomb? Sculpture? Burial equipment?
5) As an excavator, how can you interpret this tomb?
-how does it align with or depart from tombs from the same period?
-The same location?
-How is the tomb owner and their family represented? What can we say about their identity?
-How does the tomb employ traditional architecture, iconography to communicate about the tomb owner? How does it facilitate ritual?
6) Bibliography
Excavation and Interpretation
While the first parts of this project are descriptive, in this section you interpret the tomb you’ve created. As the designer and the excavator you have the advantage but you must make clear to the reader why the tomb looks the way it does.
-How does it align with or depart from tombs from the same period?
-The same site?
-How is the tomb owner and their family represented? What can we say about their identity?
-How does the tomb employ traditional architecture, iconography to communicate about thetomb owner?
How does it facilitate ritual?
