Response 1: To enhance the range and depth of understanding, mixed methods research incorporates components of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. A benefit of using a mixed technique approach is Integrating qualitative and quantitative data allows researchers to examine the phenomenon they are studying from a more comprehensive angle. This method enables a more thorough investigation of challenging nursing problems. Triangulation is an additional benefit. As a methodological metaphor, triangulation can help researchers make their theoretical claims and the foundation for their findings clearer and integrate qualitative and quantitative data more easily (Ostlund et al., 2020). Additionally, a hybrid approach improves reliability and validity. Quantitative outcomes are enhanced by the context and meaning that qualitative data offer. In nursing research, it is essential to comprehend the “why” underlying numerical results.
Complexity is one of the drawbacks of mixed methods research: they might be difficult to plan and carry out. Planning is essential for the gathering, integration, and analysis of data by researchers. Resource-intensive: More time, energy, and resources are needed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Integration Difficulties: It can be difficult to combine several data formats. To successfully integrate findings, researchers must possess proficiency in both approaches. Potential Conflicts: Using both qualitative and quantitative methods may provide results that are contradictory and need careful interpretation.
A study on chronic pain management in American Indian populations is an example of a nursing practice problem studied using a mixed methods approach. Qualitative data explore cultural beliefs, coping strategies, and barriers to pain management, while quantitative findings (like the prevalence of pain) are combined with qualitative insights (like patient narratives) to provide a culturally congruent picture of chronic pain management that considers both clinical data and lived experiences. Training in the planning, execution, analysis, synthesis, and dissemination of mixed-methods research is required for researchers. Above all, to advance our understanding of evidence-based practice, they must consider pertinent research issues that can be investigated using a mixed methodologies approach. To put it briefly, greater training in mixed-methods research is required for a variety of health researchers and medical personnel (Epidemiol, 2022). In summary, mixed methods research in nursing offers a potent way to address complex healthcare issues by bridging the gap between numbers and narratives.
Response 2: Advantages or Disadvantages Of Using Qualitative, Quantitative or Mixed Methods in Research Study
Researchers can acquire a more complete picture of the topic under investigation by combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Quantitative approaches can provide statistical data for quantifying linkages and outcomes, whereas qualitative methods can provide deeper insights into the experiences, attitudes, and meanings linked with those outcomes (Tenny et al., 2022). Combining the two methodologies allows for triangulation, which means that findings from one method can be verified, validated, or expanded on by findings from the other. This can improve the credibility and trustworthiness of the research findings. Some nursing research problems may necessitate investigation from several angles, such as patient experiences, healthcare provider viewpoints, and organizational factors. Researchers can effectively capture and analyze these different views by combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Qualitative approaches can aid in the creation of quantitative research instruments by providing insights into the phenomenon under investigation, therefore increasing the validity of quantitative data gathering tools.
Mixed-methods research is becoming increasingly important in a variety of health areas, including nursing and epidemiology. Mixed-methods approaches necessitate not only the proficiency of particular quantitative and qualitative methodologies, but also the ability to integrate two methods/datasets/findings together in the most effective manner. Health researchers must carefully consider the ‘optimal’ approach to developing, executing, assessing, and integrating both quantitative (number) and qualitative (word) data, as well as writing this up in a way that provides deeper insights and improves its application (Wasti et al., 2022). Mixed methods research can be more resource-intensive than utilizing a single method. It necessitates experience with both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, as well as additional time and resources for data collection, analysis, and integration. Integrating data from qualitative and quantitative methodologies can be difficult since each method demands unique analytical procedures. Researchers must carefully organize and perform data analysis to ensure that the findings of both methodologies are meaningfully integrated. In some circumstances, the conclusions from qualitative and quantitative methodologies may not entirely line, resulting in potential conflicts or contradictions. Managing and reconciling these disparities requires considerable consideration and may provide difficulties.
Response 3:
Nurses are front liners in healthcare and they play an important role in ensuring that patients get the best care possible. To provide quality care services, care providers rely on evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP is where nurses integrate research findings into clinical practice when making important decisions (Schmidt & Brown, 2024). The use of EBP helps to improve the quality and safety of healthcare.
I work as an emergency nurse at an acute care facility. In my workplace, healthcare providers apply EBP in several ways. hospital. First off, we usually depend on the current research to decide on the best treatments for our patients. For example, if a new study shows that a certain medicine works better for a specific illness and it has been peer-reviewed, we consider that when treating patients with the same illness. Moreover, we use research whenever we want to implement quality improvement initiatives in our facility. For instance, if we want to develop and implement a capstone change project in our facility to reduce hospital-acquired infections, we have to research first to come up with EBP strategies that have worked in other organizations and have led to positive outcomes.
To make sure EBP projects work well in my workplace, I collaborate with various stakeholders in our organization to gather their support and hear their views about research-based strategies. These stakeholders would include nurses, physicians, administrators and patients. I understand that some might worry and resist changes associated with the implementation of EBP because of how it affects their work. However, others might be excited about its use and the positive impacts it has on patient outcomes (Crawford et al., 2023). As a result, I would hold conferences within our organization to teach our stakeholders about the importance of EBP. This will help us get everyone on board to make sure EBP projects are successful. Lastly, we will introduce changes gradually so that our healthcare professionals do not get overwhelmed.
Response 4: Evidence-based research is the foundation of evidence-based practice. Evidence-based research refers to the amalgamation of research in clinical practice. It is vital is ensuring nurses are up to date with research findings in providing care to patients. It enhances patients’ quality and safety by positively impacting nursing professionals’ care delivery (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2017). Nurses can promote quality and improved practices in a clinical setting. The purpose of evidence-based research in nursing is to develop new skills, knowledge, and expertise in patient care delivery. It enables nurses to provide comprehensive and patient-centered care to all patients. It also promotes collaboration among healthcare workers in places of work.
In my working place, evidence-based practice is adopted in all aspects of care and diverse ways. First, it has changed the nurse to the patient ratio from 1:4 to 1:1 for ventilated patients and 1:2 for the non-ventilated patients. Such implementation came after new studies were conducted on effective ICU care. After the implementation, there have been fewer cases of infections, accidents, patient falls, and medication errors. Another application of evidence-based practice is evident in the insulin rotation site, which prevents atrophy (Schmidt & Brown, 2017). All staff members are equipped with insulin site identifiers, which they use and document after every injection.
