Option 1:  Watch the video clip below.  Describe the social, political, cultural, and environmental factors influencing poverty.  Does structural violence exist in your geographic region?  If so, what are some examples of it.
The social environmental factors that influence poverty include the lack of education, high crime rate in the lower income neighborhoods and the lack of higher paying job opportunities. (Chakole 2023).  Some political environmental factor that influences poverty include how certain government programs cater to specific backgrounds and income limits. For example, from my personal experience I know a single mother with two children that pays for daycare and works full time, she can barely afford to pay for her bills every month and does not qualify for food stamps or low-income housing. While there’s another single mother that only works part time and states she will stay working part time because, she’s then able to receive help from multiple government assistance such as, low-income housing, food stamps and Medicaid. In a way one mother is being penalized for working full time for her family and the other is being rewarded and can add money to her savings account every month. An example of a cultural environmental factor that can influence poverty is stigma society has towards a lower income family. I do believe there is some structural violence where I’m from, there are plenty of people that view Stock Island as “ghetto” because of the amount of lower income families that reside here.
