Discussion #1 (300 words)
Given what we have recently learned (in Chapters 8 and 9 specifically) about African American voting support for the Democratic party, does the current structure of the U.S. political system offer Black Americans avenues for Universal Freedom? The definition of Universal Freedom is up for debate (economic equality, political and social equality, fair housing etc.) and can be based on your idea and concept of freedom and what that should look like for African Americans.
This discussion will require us to think critically and offer possible alternatives that have not been presented in the text or modules. I look forward to your responses.

Based on your classmates assessment, does the alternative that they propose offer an avenue for Universal Freedom for African Americans? If not, make sure to elaborate as to why you disagree with their proposed method? Remember to be respectful of each other and each other’s ideas!
Discussion #2 (300 words)
As we have learned in this chapter, Affirmative Action programs and policies were designed to, “assure universal freedom via access to material benefits or rights for protected classes in the areas of education, employment, and government contracts.” They were enacted to remedy past discrimination and to enforce provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The Supreme Court recently struck down Affirmative ActionLinks to an external site., that ended decades of precedent in college admissions, which have aided underrepresented minorities in gaining access and admission into some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation. So my question for the group this week is, should race continue to be a factor in the college admission process? Please remember to cite the course readings and/or outside sources in your response. Remember to please be respectful in the discussion, as affirmative action can be a contested topic.
