Week 5 Assignment – Essay
Instructions
Read the chapters assigned in the “Road to Success” in the weekly Canvas modules;
Read “Getting to Yes.”
Write an essay summarizing the text “Getting to Yes.”
There should be introductory and conclusion paragraphs;
Describe the tools the text suggests for negotiators and explain how they should be used. For example, explain what it means “not to bargain over positions” or “separate people from the problem” and then give an example of how that applies to negotiation. How would you use it?
Provide examples to demonstrate knowledge of the concepts. The examples can be made up or taken from your personal experience;
Demonstrate understanding of the concepts in your writing. Writing “the book suggests that separating people from their problems” is insufficient. You will not get credit for that content. You need to state what that means;
Link the essay content to the content in the “Road to Success.” For example, we are collaborating when we elect not to bargain over positions. You could use the counterfactual and state that if a person is bargaining over positions, s/he is competing or compromising in the Dual Concerns model.  The example links the two texts with the Dual Concerns Model.  There are many ways to link the concepts.
The essay should be in New Roman font, 12 points with 1” margins;
The essay should be 750 -1000 words.
Focus on demonstrating knowledge of the concepts to score well on the paper.
Use complete sentences, proper grammar, and punctuation.
Upload your essay into Canvas as a Word document.
You may discuss the assignment with others, but you must do you own work.  The assignment is checked for plagiarism and AI tools.  AI generated and plagiarized work will not receive credit.
Grading Rubric:
20 points – grammar, punctuation, and complete sentences;
20 points – for each 50 words less than 750;
60 points – thoroughly describing at least four concepts in Getting to Yes;
60 points – linking concepts in Road to Success to Getting to Yes;
40 points – good use of examples
