Essay Prompt: As Amy Tan relates in her essay, “Mother Tongue,” many of us speak differently according to the situation (place, people, etc.). Think about the different “Englishes” or different languages you speak. For example, do you speak differently when you are at home versus when you are at work or school? Or do you speak differently when you are with your family versus when you are with friends, co-workers, or your boss? For Essay 2, write an essay that reflects on the various “Englishes” or languages you speak. Organize your essay as described below:
Introduction: In your introduction, provide background information or other ideas important to your essay’s discussion about the languages you use in different situations. For more information on effective introductions, review Chapter 29 in your textbook. For the last sentence of your introduction, provide a thesis statement that lets the reader know the main point of your essay. For help in developing an effective thesis statement, read the section on thesis statements on in Chapter 29 in your textbook. The thesis statement should NOT be an announcement. It should include the different Englishes or languages your essay will describing, and it should correspond clearly with your body paragraphs. Here is an example of such a thesis statement:
While in my current position I speak formal English, I speak many different languages in other situations such as the language I speak with my grandmother, the language I speak with my friends, and the language I speak when I am in a service industry job.
Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence. This topic sentence should introduce the language you will discuss in this paragraph. Don’t write an announcement such as “In this paragraph I will be describing…” An announcement can never be a topic sentence. Instead, provide a sentence that states the subject and focus of the paragraph. The topic sentence should also connect clearly with the thesis statement. For example, if in your thesis statement, you first mention football fan language, then this paragraph should be about that topic. Then you should write several supporting sentences describing this language. See Chapter 29 in your textbook for more discussion of topic sentences. Provide examples and details. Provide a wrap-up sentence at the end of the paragraph.
Conclusion: The conclusion should begin with a concluding statement that reviews your thesis statement and main points. For more information on creating an effective conclusion, review Chapter 29 in your textbook.

Required Length – At least three full pages, but no more than five, and at least five paragraphs

Evaluation:
This essay will be graded using the rubric available directly under the assignment in Moodle. It will be evaluated on its adherence to the assignment prompt, its organization, the strength of its content, and its grammar/punctuation.
