A design project composed of at most 3 team members that provides an opportunity to apply the subject matter of the course to a “real” industrial problem. The projects should address the following major issues:
An application of course material to solve a design problem (production system analysis based on simulation including capacity, sequencing/scheduling, layout, and material flow issues).
An economic justification of how your work will improve the “real life” problem.
Your task is to find a “production process” for which you can obtain/generate data in order to analyze it using tools from IMSE 4310 in order to identify improvement opportunities.
Requirements:
A Lean Analysis including a value stream map and 6S audit.
A Six Sigma Fishbone Diagram showing the factors affecting the overall performance measure for the process.
Use of simulation (Simio with statistical test on both input and output) and application of at least 1 of the following analysis techniques from the course to analyze the problem: optimized assembly line balancing, kanban/CONWIP system, facility layout optimization, material handling system specification, cell formation.
Economic / performance justification (you will probably need to assume your cost data, but the performance data should come from your analysis).
Follow the rubric outline for your report outline. Reports are typically in the 8-12 page range, including figures.
