What are the basic elements of cognition? Let us start with concepts and prototypes, what does a concept represent? What are examples of prototypes? Concepts are cognitive things that we understand to be, such as good or bad, right or wrong, justice and injustice, but it could also be different things we look at each day and we can understand are different such as; cars, airplanes, boats, bicycles and even differentiating between a television screen and a computer screen. Because we understand the concepts in which they are based on we can determine their place in the world because we have all been shown they are that way. Prototypes, they are the literal definition of “lead by example”, a person can be the first to start a movement and because of that multitudes of individuals follow and example, it does not necessarily have to be a multitude, your parents for example can show you how to do thing the right way or the wrong way, to you that is the prototype on which you base the choices and actions you take in your life. A prototype in short is the original “model” from which you learned something, whether of value or not, the point is you had to learn it from somewhere and that somewhere was the prototype.
What is a schema? A schema is how we put order to situations, places, or events, if you go to a library you know that there is an order to that place, you understand that there are books and that you will find them in order and the information you seek will be in there. To explains it in an easier way, all it means is that your brain needs a way to organize things so that it does not get confused, there is an order to thing, to all things and by understanding that you are able to move with purpose and direction, all of this is of course is learned over time and as you progress in life, that is what a schema is. Finally, what is a mental image? A mental image is what you see in your mind when you think for example, how big is a place versus a car? Immediately you think of a plane next to a car, am I right? Well that is a mental image, when you think of something that is not there, that is a mental image. A box, a circle, a hexagon, the moon, the sun, cloud patterns, they are all examples of mental imaging, as long as you’ve seen it before or if someone explains it to you, if you can imagine it then it is a mental image.
