Thesis statement and topic sentences
Paragraph structure
Overall organization of your ideas
APA format
Good connections between ideas from the texts (Try to discuss multiple sources in each body paragraph so your essay sounds more cohesive).
Sentence-level control

Your essay will be graded using this rubric.
Grading Rubric – Essays
An A-range paper is exceptional. It has a strong, precise, argumentative thesis. It identifies thoughtful, even intriguing points of analysis that can be well supported by information from assigned sources. Claims and observations advance the thesis. It is written fluently and with appropriate formality, and contains very few minor proofreading errors. Each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that identifies the main point and how that point relates to the thesis. The order of the paragraphs enhances the argument of the paper. The paper coheres from beginning to end. Quotations and paraphrases are interpreted accurately and used effectively to support all claims. Sources are frequently identified by name, with careful separation of source’s ideas from the writer’s own. The paper uses documentation style correctly, both in-text and on the Reference page.
A B-range paper is good. It contains an argumentative thesis that may be vague or imprecise on some points, and it identifies some points of analysis that can be supported by information from assigned sources. Discussion gestures at the thesis but does not make thorough connections. It is written clearly, with appropriate formality, and contains only occasional errors. Some paragraphs have topic sentences that may not identify the main point correctly and/or may not connect to the thesis. Paragraphs are generally arranged in a logical order. The paper mostly coheres throughout. Although slight digressions exist, the overarching focus of the paper comes through clearly from beginning to end. Quotations and paraphrases from all assigned sources are interpreted accurately and used effectively to support some or most claims. Source’s ideas, usually mentioned by name, are identifiable from writer’s own. Understanding of appropriate documentation format is evident, but details may be inconsistently applied.
A C-range paper is unsatisfactory. It contains a descriptive thesis and identifies only one or two points of analysis that are partially supported by information from the assigned sources. Claims and observations are only partially connected to the thesis. It is written with sentence level errors that interfere with reading comprehension and/or struggles to establish academic tone. Few paragraphs have topic sentences. Many paragraphs seem out of order. Only some quotations and paraphrases are interpreted accurately. Sources may be only loosely connected to the claims. Unclear whose ideas are whose, with only general acknowledgements. Inadequate documentation appears throughout.
An F-range paper is incomplete. It may not have a thesis and does not identify points of analysis. May make unrelated claims and observations. It is written with many sentence level errors that make reading comprehension difficult and/or is written in an informal register not appropriate to the assignment. Paragraphs lack topic sentences and/or there is no obviously discernable order or structure. Most quotations and paraphrases are not interpreted accurately. Little to no support is provided for the claims made. No obvious attempt appears to distinguish source ideas from writer’s own. Little or no discernable documentation exists.
