To wrap up Born a Crime, you’ll be creating a soundtrack for the book. It should be fun, but also will require thoughtfulness!
For this project, you will:
Create a slideshow (Microsoft PPT, Google Slides, Canva, etc.) to house your content.
Slide 1: Title Page — Find or create an image that you feel would make a good album cover for your soundtrack. This should not simply be a picture of the book or of Trevor Noah. Be creative! Your title page should also include a title for your soundtrack. Be sure to include your name as well.
Slides 2-7: Song Selections, Part 1 — Review your favorite quotes and reflections that you’ve turned in while reading the book. For each section, you’ll select two songs that are inspired by the reading. So, for Part 1 (Chapters 1-8) you’ll select two songs, for Part 2 (Chapters 9-14) you’ll select two songs, and for Part 3 (Chapters 15-18) you’ll select two songs.
On each slide, include the name of the song, author, link to the song/video, and 1-2 paragraphs defending your choice. Your defense should clearly link themes of the song to themes of the book. Think critically & find meaning.
Slides 8-9: Song Selections, Part 2 — Do some research on anti-Apartheid music (start by clicking through these links & articles). Select two songs to include on your soundtrack. On each slide, include the name of the song, author, link to the song/video, and 1-2 paragraphs explaining what you learned about this song and why you feel it belongs on your Born a Crime soundtrack. Make connections between your research on Apartheid, understanding of reconciliation efforts, and Noah’s personal story.
Slides 10-11: Songs Selections, Part 3 — Choose any two songs that connect to the overall themes of the book. On each slide, include the name of the song, author, link to the song/video, and 1-2 paragraphs defending your choice. Your defense should clearly link themes of the song to themes of the book. Think critically & find meaning.
Big picture your slideshow will have 11 slides — the first is an intro slide, the remaining 10 each identify a unique song based on the requirements outlined above.
This is a major project grade — that should be fun & easy — but only if you follow the requirements! The bulk of your grade will be based on how thoughtful & thorough your responses are. One sentence will not result in a high grade. No need to write a book, but be clear & convincing in why you made your selections.
