Student Constructed Integration application assignment
For the Student Constructed Integration/Application assignment, students will select
from a list of topics that are provided, and then will build their own Contemporary
Society Integration/Application assignment. You will identify additional readings, beyond
course material, that help explain the importance of the topic you choose. You will
explain how the readings are related to course material, and how you understand the
topic as important for leisure and leisure services.
In order to complete this assignment, you will complete the following items.
1. Choose/refine a topic from the list of contemporary society topics (found below).
These topics can be narrowed or refined, as needed, for example, you could
focus on one country/region for any travel discussion, or discuss a specific kind
of deviant leisure, or particular demographic inequalities (EDI), or a specific
social media platform. These are simply examples, there are many more
possibilities.
Find four readings/resources related to your chosen topic. They do not need to be
academic resources. In addition, there could be videos or other non-print resources or
websites, rather than an article or chapters.
Here are four examples, I chose to focus on
the concept of leisure time for this example search:
• https://www.ted.com/talks/laura_vanderkam_how_to_gain_control_of_you

page=1
0time&databaseList=
All of the resources should relate to some aspect of leisure/recreation, as well as your
chosen topic, stay focused.
2. Provide an access location (URL, for example), and give a 100-word
summary/description of each resource. It is very easy to use American focused
resources. It is important to dig deeper and find Canadian related
readings/resources so that the work is grounded in a Canadian context, when
possible.
3. Design 3 multi-part questions. The questions should be conceived/created so
that someone addressing/discussing these questions, after reading your chosen
resources, would gain additional knowledge about the topic. Ask three questions:
A) What is the relevance and importance of this topic to current society, and to
leisure? B) How has your understanding and opinion of this topic been informed
and/or changed by the reading & discussion/consideration? C) What is the
relevance of this issue to leisure services?
4. Finally, for your chosen topic, write a small (not to exceed 750 words)
reaction/reflection paper, giving your reaction to all phases of the contemporary
topic (new reading materials, discussion, personal reflection, & future
implications).
List of contemporary society topics from which you can choose:
• Covid-19 and home-bound leisure
• Protests/activism as leisure
• Consumption and leisure (conspicuous consumption)
• Leisure inequalities
• Leisure and technology
• Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) and leisure
• Social media and/as leisure
• Adventure or high-risk outdoor recreation
• Leisure and community development
• Leisure and religion/spirituality
• Leisure/recreation and immigration
• Leisure and sustainability (climate change)
• Deviant leisure (pick a specific aspect)
• Healthy living & leisure (obesity, heart disease, etc…)
Topics can be considered that are not on this list, however, they must be
cleared with the TA/Instructor.
A few additional notes:
1. Use APA when referencing. This includes both in-text citations and a reference
page. Here is a link to the style guide:
