This assessment measures the following module learning outcomes:
Develop a coherent and specialist knowledge of the relationship between media, humanitarianism and social change.
Identify, describe and evaluate leading contemporary academic approaches from a range of disciplines that engage with topics relevant to the module.
Demonstrate an understanding of forms and practices of humanitarian communication, and how they organise its public understanding and responses.
Select and appropriately analyse relevant examples in the light of perspectives offered in the module, demonstrating an awareness of their spatial and temporal specificities.
Work effectively and independently to research and critically engage with primary and secondary sources to develop an informed argument.
Assessment details:
Invest time and effort in your essay structure.
Introduction: Tell your reader what you are going to argue, and how you are going to do that. It is advisable to re-write your introduction after you’ve written your essay. It is okay, in fact it is encouraged, to state what your findings are at the start.
Main body: Ground your essay in theory and example(s). Aim for a balanced account of these. Try to avoid very general and broad statements. Don’t sacrifice analysis at the expense of description, but provide enough information to the reader about the topic of your analysis.
Conclusion: Your conclusion should re-state the argument you’ve presented in the beginning, and discuss in light of your analysis.
Both your introduction and conclusion should be (re-)written after you’ve written the main body.
References: A good essay is an informed essay. You are encouraged to read widely (and critically) and draw on a range of sources and examples for your essay.
Draw from at least some of the key and recommended readings.
Stay within the word limit including + or – 10%. The bibliography is excluded from the word count.
Assessment format: Word document. 12 Times New Roman font. You can use up to 4 headings.
