Mini-Assignment 2: COVID-data
We want to address is the following: Is there an association between students feeling that the number of hours they studied decreased during the pandemic, and their attitudes towards continuing online learning post-pandemic? .To answer this question, we will use the variables from data set in mini-assignment part 1, and formally perform a hypothesis test to answer the question regarding the association.
Part 1: Setting up the hypothesis test
(2 marks) State the null hypothesis for the chi-square test of independence in the context of the research question of interest.
(2 marks) State the alternative hypotheses for the chi-square test of inde- pendence in the context of the research question of interest.
Part 2: Chi-square hypothesis test
(5 marks) Using excel, construct the contigency table for the two variables of interest. (Hint: question 1 from part 1 will help you to keep track of how to set up the table))
(5 marks) Compute the chi-squared test statistic. This should be com- puted without computer software. You can either create an appendix with the steps shown there, and then state the final answer under this question, or you can show you work under this question and state the final answer as well.
(2 marks) Perform the formal hypothesis test at the α = 0.05 level. Make a decision/conclusion about the association of the two variables within the context of the research question.
(4 marks) Perform the formal hypothesis test at the α = 0.1 level. Make a decision/conclusion about the association of the two variables within the context of the research question. Has the conclusion changed?
Part 3: Discussion about findings
(10 marks) Does the findings of your hypothesis support or negate previous work done on distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic? This requires some literature review. What factors may have influenced the findings you discovered? You should provide some context or explanation for why your results corroborate the literature, or why it may diverge.
(5 marks) Are there any potential limitations in your analysis? There may be several statistical considerations that could have effected your analysis. List at least two limitations, and how they may influence the findings.
