Your Completed Paper Should Consist of The Following Parts:
1. Policy Exploration Of Your Topic: This is a section in which you explain the topic that you have chosen for Civic Engagement, why it is important to you personally, how it is relevant in the context of the course-work for this class, as well as the recent political events/ controversies relevant to your topic, and the current status of politics dealing with your topic. What are some of the people or groups that are most concerned with and/or most involved with the politics for your topic?
This is the section most like a conventional college research paper, in which the student is expected to use well researched, quality sources to present an informative policy exploration of the chosen topic. Well-documented research is a priority in this section. Further, the student should clearly identify a research question about the chosen problem to be addressed through their own Civic Engagement activities (Identify a problem/ conflict relevant to your topic that needs to be addressed through political engagement).
2. Policy Preferences & Desired Outcomes: Please describe your personal perspective on the topic (theory or your informed preferences, not just your subjective opinion). For most topics appropriate for Civic Engagement, there are fundamental problems, disagreements or conflicts. What do you argue are some of the most important causes of the problem or conflict relevant to your topic? Who is right or wrong? What do you think should happen? Can any of the fundamental conflicts or problems relevant to your topic be addressed or rectified through the active, political engagement of concerned citizens such as yourself? Please describe the hypothetical policy outcomes (political results) that you envision as the optimum final results for your chosen topic. Is it realistic that the ultimate results you describe could be achieved in the short term, in your lifetime, ever?
3.a) A Description of a Plan for Your Civic Engagement: this is the section of the paper in which you explain/ explore the various options available for publicly expressing your own preferences, concerns, or ideas on the topic of your choice by means of civic engagement. In fact, civic engagement should be more ‘public’ than the simple act of expressing one’s own, individual political preferences in a single act, on one isolated day. It should involve organized participation with other (like- minded) people in efforts to make a positive contribution to dealing with an important political problem.
So, what is the “Civic” nature of this assignment? The public nature of civic engagement should imply the
necessity for you to become proactive in expressing your concerns,
preferences or opinions about your topic– in a public manner.
Please don’t infer that this assignment will require you to paint some radical
poster-board, go to a local street corner in your community, and scream your ideological worldview at innocent passerby’s.
Rather, this project should give the student insight that individual ideas, concerns, and preferences are much more likely to be influential in a democracy when expressed publicly, preferably in coordination with a network of people with common interest in the topic. Does this mean that I have to join an interest group? — Not Necessarily. — As long as you find a way to express your preferences, concerns or ideas on your chosen topic “publicly” you will meet the “civic engagement” requirement for this project. (Ex: 1. create a website; 2) write letters or e-mails to influential government officials with authority regarding your topic; 3) contact influential public figures, or influential groups with similar concerns as yours regarding your topic;
4) attend public rallies, hearings, protests or seminars dealing with the topic of your choice…
3.b) A Narration or Description of Your Actual Civic Engagement Experiences, Observations for this Project: * Please see the following feedback I recently provided on a student’s paper for this project: “Civic engagement is about more than simply talking to your mother and someone at your church about your political views once or twice. Civic engagement should involve organizing, or engaging in an organization, with other people who share your opinion about a specific topic for the purpose of publicly expressing that opinion in a political context.” Please use this section to provide an accurate, honest description of the activities that you undertook to become politically involved– in cooperation with others– in publicly expressing your ideas, preferences or concerns about your chosen topic. Essentially, tell me what you did to become actively politically engaged with the politics of your topic.
4) The Critical Reflection section of your paper will conclude the paper. Here, it is appropriate for the student to continue with the first person, familiar tone of voice allowed in the “engagement” section above (using I, me, mine…). I am interested in observing your critical assessment of the nature of politics that are ongoing relevant to your topic, the potential biases or objectivity of information learned from various sources on your topic…
It will be expected to provide evidence in your paper that you have worked cooperatively with other people, groups, associations or organizations in order to find creative, valid opportunities through which to become engaged in
publicly expressing your preferences, concerns, or simply your ideas about
your chosen topic.
