Students have the opportunity to earn up to 21 extra discussion board points by viewing 3 TED Talks and completing a 200-word write-up for each. Students would first go to: https://www.ted.com/playlists/329/new_tech_new_moralsLinks to an external site. At this website, there are 9 TED Talks about ethical issues involving advances in technology. To earn all 21 points, students should pick 3 of the 9 TED Talks, watch them, and then complete 3 200-word responses (1 for each TED Talk). Students will be awarded 7 points for each TED Talk write-up (with a maximum of 21 points if a student completes all 3). All 3 writes-ups may be submitted in 1 word document but be sure to list the title of the TED Talk above its corresponding 200- word response. The 200-word student responses should first summarize the issue. Next, students may state their opinion about whether the potential benefits of the new technology outweigh any potential negative consequences. Once I review the write-ups, I will manually award any earned extra credit directly to the week 1 discussion board score. This assignment is optional, but I strongly encourage students to participate and earn as many extra points as possible. There will be no additional extra credit opportunities for the course.
