Requirements: 4,500-6,000 words,
The final paper is about a single environmental justice issue. You must focus on a single case study, in a single country, and choose a topic that is recent or ongoing (no history papers, sorry). I advise you to build on an issue and/or place that we have covered during the class, as this will allow you to use work you’ve done as a discussion leader and in your reflections in your research paper.
There are four main sources that I expect that you’ll use:
Newspapers
Gray literatureLinks to an external site. from private companies, governments, NGOs, activists, etc.
Documentary films
Academic literature
For this class, I do not expect you to provide me a review of the academic literature, or engage with environmental justice theories or concepts that we don’t cover in class (but, of course, you are encouraged to do so if you wish). I do expect that you use the concepts or theories that we cover in class to help you analyze your case study (this should not be an extended report on an environmental justice issue. Your research paper will answer these three questions:
What is the relevant context for understanding the issue? This may be historical, legal, ecological, political, etc.
What is the issue? Some questions to think about: Who/what has caused the issue? Who benefits, and who loses out? Who is deemed responsible, and why? What is being done about it?
What broader conclusions about environmental (in)justice can you draw? Some questions to think about: Who cares? Who should care? What would it mean to care? How you make this case is up to you.
Evaluation
Providing the proper context for understanding the issue. Assume that your reader does not know much about what you’re talking about, and provide them enough context to understand what you’re talking about, and why it matters.
Demonstrates engagement and understanding of a few of the concepts, theories, ideas, approaches that we’ve covered in the course.
Convincing explanation of why this issue is important for our thinking about environmental justice.
Clearly written and organized. If you have questions about style and mechanics, or have never written a research paper, please come talk to me or set up a meeting with the writing center. As this is an upper division seminar, I expect that you are familiar with conventions of academic writing.
**Proper citations.**
(Topics concepts to use – slow violence, environmental colonialism – and concepts from relfections)
