Write a 3-4 page paper on one of the following paper topics. Your pages should contain about 300 words each, and the font should be 12pt. Times New Roman. You If you wish to write your paper on a topic other than those listed, please come to my office hours to discuss your paper idea with me.
You may discuss these paper topics, or other issues in philosophy, with your fellow students; however, the paper you turn in must be substantially your own work. A paper that you wrote for another class is not acceptable. Feel free to schedule a meeting with me via Zoom or Teams to discuss your paper topic. Papers are due at Dec 11. Late papers will lose one letter grade per day, unless you have arranged for an extension in advance. After three days late, the paper will be marked as an automatic 0. If you need an extension, speak to your me.
YOU MAY NOT USE OUTSIDE MATERIAL FOR THIS PAPER. Cite material from the course in any citation format (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago). If you talk about material from lecture, cite that too.
Please indicate on your paper which question you are answering. You do not have to reproduce the text of the question in your paper. Number your pages! All summary must demonstrate that you understand the arguments—do not depend too much on the authors! Make sure that your paper has a clear thesis, and that you state that thesis at or close to the beginning of your paper. Be sure to answer each question in the prompt. Do not copy and paste the arguments from PowerPoints or from lecture into your paper; show you understand them by explaining them in your own words.
Is abortion ever morally permissible, and if so, under what circumstances? Explain at least two arguments for your view (i.e., explain either Marquis or Thomson’s argument and create your own). Also, explain at least one objection against your view and discuss how you would reply. What, if any, moral theory does your view appeal to?
Is there a universal right for healthcare? Do states and private industries have the responsibility of ensuring everyone gets healthcare? Give an argument that we do not have a right to healthcare. Give one argument that we do have a right to healthcare. Draw on Papadimos and Baumrin to make your arguments. Which do you think is better? Why? What, if any, moral theory does your argument appeal to? Why?
What is our responsibility to sentient animals? Why think that we have a responsibility? Give an argument for why animals matter morally. Give one argument for why they do not matter morally. Be sure to draw on Singer, Norcoss, or Goodpaster in your answer. Which argument do you find more plausible? What, if any, moral theory does your argument appeal to?
Are corporations morally responsible? What is the stockholder theory? What is the stakeholder theory? Give an argument for each one of these theories? Be sure to draw on the course material (The Office and Philosophy) when making these arguments. Which theory of corporate morality do you find the most appealing? Why?
