“Formatting
Font, Margins, Spacing, Title: Typed, double-spaced, 12-pt Times New Roman font, 1-inch page margins, original title that gives the reader an idea of the main theme/topic of the essay.
Page Length: 3 – 4 pages long, (1/2 page shorter or longer ok)
Structure and Thesis: Introduction, body paragraphs, and Conclusion. Thesis statement Download Thesis statement at the end of the Introduction.
Quotes and Works Cited: Use quotes from the primary source documents and GML. Cite with (Author, page number) after the quote. Aim for 1-2 quotes per body paragraph. Each quote no longer than 3 lines. No need for Works Cited, no penalty if included.
Plagiarism: Your essay must be your own work. Turnitin will scan it and compare to everything in its database (student essays, websites, books, etc.). Any plagiarized content may result in point penalties and reporting to the Campus Disciplinarian. Your essay must be scanned by Turnitin for me to grade it.
Try using Turnitin’s Draft CoachLinks to an external site. feature so you can scan your essay yourself before submitting to see if there are issues.
AI: The Turnitin report includes a percentage for AI. This percentage must be zero for me to grade your essay. AI now is used in many places, not just Chat GPT, also Grammarly, Google Translate, and even Google searches. You can still use the Spelling Check and Grammar Check programs embedded in Word/Google Docs.

In Weeks 10 – 13, we examined key developments from 1800 to 1840, including the Market Revolution, Jacksonian Democracy, Indian Removal, and the Cotton Kingdom. Choose TWO of these developments and analyze how they affected Americans’ freedom and changed the meaning of freedom itself.
Your paper must utilize 2 assigned primary source documents from Weeks 10-13 to support your analysis. Your paper will not earn a passing grade if it does not fulfill this requirement.
Remember that the essay should not be based solely on the primary source documents. Most information should come from GML and class sessions, with primary sources just used to provide evidence.”
