For your definition argument, create an argument based on a definition,
which should be at the heart of your thesis.
Example:
Claim: Love is a real emotion and is not just an illusion.
Process:
• First, define “love.” Include a dictionary definition of “love” (make sure
to cite it). Possibly adjust the definition of “love” with your own way of
defining it, provided that might help with your argument.
• Develop a thesis statement that makes your claim about love’s existence
clear.
• Provide evidence that love is a genuine emotion that people feel. Give
examples and explanations that help you communicate these ideas to
your audience. Use the three rhetorical appeals to the best of your
ability.
The possibilities are endless. You could try to define anything from “sport” to
“racism.” You could choose a serious topic or something more casual that
interests you. Just make sure the argument is focused on a definition in some
way.
In addition, this paper requires the use of exactly three outside sources (one is
the dictionary definition). These three sources need to be listed on a source
page and cited within the text of your paper.
Your argument should be at least 900 words long. This includes the Works
Cited page.
Double-space your paper and use Times New Roman, 12-point font.
Something similar, like Calibri, would also be acceptable. Include an original
title centered at the top of the first page. Use standard one-inch margins.
Small penalties will apply to papers that do not include a title or are not
double-spaced or paragraphed properly.
