For this assignment, choose two articles from the list provided in this syllabus and write a comparative analysis. 3 pages not including the title page and reference page.
Although this is not a strict check-list, you may want to address the following in your analysis:
Methods — what are the different research methods of these two pieces? Do they cover similar or different issues/questions?
Evidence — what is the data here? How can you compare and contrast the evidence, both in terms of the methods that shaped it but also in terms of the size or scope of it?
Site — although this could be embedded in evidence, you may want to address it separately. What is the location of this research, what is the date of it, what is the setting? Two studies could both look at 16 year old boys, but if one is from 1950 and one is from 2018, that’s very different; similarly, 16 year old boys in high school may be very different from 16 year old boys who are incarcerated. Try to compare this aspect of the research.
Results — what are the actual findings here and how could you think of them side by side?
Limitations — what are the limitations of these pieces (this could include both the limitations the articles make explicit and any limitations you infer)? Might one article address or “fill-in” the limitations of the other? Or does one article compound/highlight the limitations of the other?
Theoretical–practical spectrum — some articles are very focused on the theoretical implications, while others are very practitioner-oriented. How would you place these two articles on such a spectrum?
Audience — a related but separate question from #6. Who, do you think, are the intended audiences for these articles?
Critical-ness — while all research looks to produce new knowledge, not all research approaches existing structures from a critical stance? How critical of their settings, comparatively, would you say these two articles are?
Authorial stance — different methods, different projects, and different research traditions call on the researcher/author to be present in different ways. Sometimes, articles even include a “researcher’s stance” section; other times, such stances are more embedded in the work. How might you characterize the author(s’) stance to research?
Applicability — what connections can you draw between these two articles and your area of expertise or scope?
