Although evaluation comes after intervention in the generalist intervention model, it is not reserved solely for that spot. Nor is it done once and that’s it. Evaluation can be seen to take a role in every decision a social worker makes. For example, before trying a new technique, the social worker must evaluate how it aligns with the client’s biopsychosocial needs, cultural and spiritual life, and mental health concerns. The social worker must then evaluate the technique’s efficacy after implementation. And along the way, the social worker must evaluate how all elements are working together to support the client’s improvement.
Evaluation can often benefit from discussion with colleagues. For this Discussion, you prepare a case presentation as if you were consulting with colleagues at your agency, and you receive input from your class peers.
To prepare:
Reflect on your Field Instructor’s feedback from previous process recordings.
Review the Learning Resource on effective case presentations.
Select a client from your field site.
Imagine that your class colleagues are a team of professionals with whom you work. You must brief them on the client, as well as the associated goals, therapeutic interventions, and other details of the case.
Download the PowerPoint template and use it to construct your case presentation.
In your narration and on the slides, be sure to use professional language and terminology.
By Day 4
Post a narrated case presentation in which you provide an analysis of what you, as the social work intern, did with the client, how you did it, and how the client responded. Include the following specific information:
Client demographics
Identified problem
Client goals
Tools used
Intervention strategies
Evaluation tool
Your use of self in the therapeutic process
Your question pertaining to the case
