The Topic I have selected to write about is comparing the differences and similarities of William Bradford’s “Of Plymouth Plantation” with Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” and the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson. I chose Bradford’s writing because it gives a look at the Pilgrims lives and their attempt to create a new community. Paine’s “Common Sense” and the Declaration of Independence are important documents that explain the ideas behind American independence. By comparing these writing I was to show how the struggles, determination, and the want for a new society are shown differently. This will show how American values and identity have changed from the Colonial Era to the Revolutionary Era. Research: You will be doing extensive library research for this paper. In addition to evidence from your primary source (quotes from the literature), you will need a minimum of three secondary sources (sources other than your textbook), for a total of at least four sources to be listed on your works cited page. You MUST quote and cite all primary and secondary sources to receive a passing grade.
Every body paragraph should have at least three quotes. At least one quote should come from a primary source (the literature), and at least one quote should come from a secondary source (the research). No more then five quotes are allowed in each body paragraph.
Approved Secondary Sources: Since this is an online class, we will focus on using sources that can be accessed online. You may use material from the Alabama Virtual Library (Gale’s Literature is and excellent database on the AVL for this assignment). Visit the library link on BSCC.edu for more information about our libraries and the AVL. You may need to verify your location if you are accessing AVL off campus. If you are asked for an access code or library code for the AVL, you can contact your campus library to get this information.
BSCC also has access to another excellent literary database outside of the AVL. Look for the “Databases” section on the library page. Then look for the Bloom’s Literary Reference Online link. If you are off campus, you will need the username: bevill and the password: history to access this database. When using these databases, make sure you are selecting articles that fall into the analysis and criticism categories, not biographies, overviews, or synopsis.
This presentation includes step-by-step instructions for finding sources using the databases provided by the BSCC Library: Library Orientation for Literary TopicsDownload Library Orientation for Literary Topics
There is video on the BSCC LibraryLinks to an external site. page which provides instructions for accessing and using these databases.
Finally, when you visit the library page, also check out “Guides” and look for the “MLA Works Cited Guide.” This is a document prepared by our library staff with detailed examples for creating your works cited page in MLA format using the 2016 format.
NO INTERNET SOURCES ARE ALLOWED FOR THIS PAPER! While you will access the AVL and other databases online, these are premium databases and not considered an internet source.
As this is a research paper, you will be quoting and paraphrasing from several sources. You must also include a works cited page to list the primary and secondary sources you use. You will be graded on your ability to cite these sources appropriately and put together a correct works cited page. The works cited page that accompanies your essay must include all sources, primary and secondary, used in the essay in correct MLA format and in alphabetical order.
Every student in this class will be held to the highest standards of academic integrity. Any student who intentionally tries to deceive by plagiarizing his or her research paper, including using AI generated writing, will receive a zero on this paper. Be aware!
Essay Proposal: As part of this assignment, you will need to submit an essay proposal. This proposal should explain which work(s) and author(s) you have selected, why you made this selection, and what the focus of your essay will be.
Thesis and Annotated Bibliography: You will also need to prepare a list of three potential secondary sources with complete MLA style citation and a brief annotation summarizing this source (at least one paragraph). You should include a working thesis at the top of this document.
Essay Format: The final copy of this paper should be 700-1000 words in length, at least five paragraphs, double-spaced, with standard margins. This is a formal research paper and should follow the MLA format, including an appropriate works cited page. Put a word count at the end of your essay.
