The final project is very open-ended, but it should in some way represent deep
consideration of human connection and disconnection and an attempt to “connect”
with readers, listeners, etc., through the form you choose. The project can be:
● a scholarly paper on a topic of your choice in which you reflect on human
connection and/or disconnection and as aspect of it, drawing on multiple
readings from the class (and outside sources if desired)
● an interview focused on deep listening in the style of Carol Gilligan, followed
by analysis
● a piece of art or creative writing or performance, with a three-page
written component explaining how you are exploring human connection in it
● a research project
● an education plan
● anything else you might think of and propose
Whatever its form, again, the project should be deeply rooted in some issue of
human connection or disconnection (or both), and your piece should be some
attempt at making a human connection or reconnection through one of the forms
listed above.
class (display of artwork, readings, music, etc.)
Regardless of form, all projects should articulate*:
● The theoretical underpinnings of the project in at least 3 ideas we’ve studied in
class (e.g., the social brain, patriarchy, gender socialization, attachment theory,
primatology, the culture of disbelief, etc.)
● Some key quotations from the readings that have influenced you
● If another kind of project, it should be accompanied by an articulation (3 pages) of
the ideas that have influenced you and what you are trying to accomplish with your
piece–how it relates to human connection
