•The Chemistry 30 Curriculum requires that all students must complete a “Student Directed Study” in order to earn credit for the course.
•“ Create and carry out a plan to explore one or more topics of personal interest relevant to Chemistry 30 in depth”
•For this course, here is what I expect you to do to earn the 4.5%:
•Describe (in detail) the structure and function of a chemical of your choice. You must
include the following:
– classification: organic or inorganic
– a labelled (atoms, bonds, bond angles) 3-D diagram of the chemical
– all functional groups present (organic)
– polarity
– intermolecular forces present
– chemical name and common/product names if applicable
– who discovered (or synthesized) the chemical first and when
– uses of the chemical
– List of sources where you found your information
•You have the freedom to choose how you would like to prepare this assignment—you
may do a website, a brochure, a poster, a PowerPoint presentation etc.
•SDS is due one week before the last day of classes (December 4th), however, you may
hand it in as early as you’d like
I have also provided an example on how to do it
