Guidelines for Term Project
Students will design an exercise program using various modalities for the term project. Students must use a combination of the following five modalities: free weights, body weight, machine system, cable system; and elastic resistance band. An exercise for each of the following ten primary joint actions must be included: horizontal shoulder flexion, shoulder flexion, shoulder abduction, horizontal shoulder abduction; shoulder adduction; shoulder extension, hip flexion, hip extension, spinal flexion, spinal extension; and lastly where ever possible, compound exercises should be used.
For each exercise, the following information must be included:
SECTION A: General Information
Identify the following for each exercise:
Primary joint action strengthened (e.g., shoulder flexion, shoulder abduction, etc.)
Name of Exercise (e.g., Chest Press, Overhead narrow shoulder press, etc.)
Modality used (e.g., body weight, free weight (bar), etc.)
Body area(s) strengthened (e.g., chest, posterior thigh, etc.)
Plane of movement for proximal joint (e.g. sagittal, frontal, etc.)
SECTION B: Exercise Desсrіption
Describe how the exercise is performed: Using two reliable sources in 2 separate paragraphs, explain how the exercise is performed, e.g., According to (name source) this exercise is performed by (DESCRIBE HOW THE EXERCISE IS PERFORMED—I DO NOT WANT ANY OTHER INFORMATION), cite the source (place a number that corresponds to the source in the bibliography). After the desсrіptions, in a separate paragraph, indicate whether you agree or disagree with each author′s desсrіption and why.
SECTION C: Photos
Include photos or pictures of the exercise being performed (both the start and end positions)
SECTION D: Exercise Analysis
In chart format, identify the following:
Joints involved in the performance of the exercise
Joint action for each joint involved in the performance of the exercise
Muscles responsible for each of the joint actions
SECTION E: Precautions
Identify any precautions for the performance of the exercise.
Structure of the paper
Students need to introduce their sources in the context of their paper by author or website name and provide a citation for each source. A bibliography of references must be included that lists the sources cited in the text of the paper. Each new exercise must start on a new page. Papers need to be typed, single-sided and single-spaced on 8 ½ x 11” paper with a 12 font. All sections and sub-sections must be labeled and numbered. The project must have a cover sheet and a table of contents.
