Write an 1000 word (990-1010 words) comparitive essay on this question: “Stories create community, enable us to see through the eyes of other people, and open us to the claims of
others.” – Peter Forbes
To what extent has your comparative study of texts for Narratives that Shape our World reflected this view? In
your response, make close reference to the pair of texts that you have studied this term. Use the movie arrival, by dennis vilinueve and these 4 poems from drop bear, by evelyn araluen: Decolonial Poets (avant gubba), ms kookaburra, learning bundjalung on tharawal and index australis. In the essay, make sure to compare the two texts and dont ignore that part of the question. In the 2 BP’s, talk abou tthe 3 mains points in the quote, Stories: create community, see through the eyes of other people, open us to the claims of
others. Also use real quotes and scenes from the sources and also state what language or film techinque is used. Also, pick a major focus for the essay and have main overarching themes in the BPs, like perspective. Also use this structure: Intro: Sentence 1 (general overview, answer the question):
Sentence 2 (thesis statement):
Sentence 3 (text 1):
Sentence 4 (text 2):
Sentence 5 (link/thus statement):
BPS: Sentence 1 (Topic sentence):
Sentence 2 Introduce texts.
Use the comparative sentence structure with ‘whereas’ as your connective – you are comparing the same idea and how it is portrayed in each text.
Sentence 3 Text 1
Sentence 4 Text 2
Sentence 5: Text 1
Sentence 6: Text 2
Sentence 7: link sentence (to topic statement)
I have made a small start on topic sentences and some info but its small and patchy: Stories enable us to see through the eyes of other people, fostering empathy and understanding.
Storytelling has the ability to evoke empathy, opening audiences to the claims of others and encouraging readers to consider new perspectives and views.
Stories open us to the claims of others by presenting diverse perspectives and challenging dominant narratives
Stories create community by connecting individuals through shared experiences and collective understanding.
In Arrival, the storyline follows Dr. Louise Banks as she learns the heptapod language, ultimately leading to a global collaboration to understand the alien visitors, conveying how communication and shared understanding can bridge cultural divides.
Contrastingly, “Dropbear” uses storytelling to highlight the fragmented and painful history of Indigenous Australians, seeking to reclaim and unify their stories to unite their community.
In “Arrival”
